Puddings & Toyboys

A blog about my beautiful budgies.

The last two weeks

We are still reeling from the loss of Thomas.  After my last post on Thomas & his health problems, various things were going on in the background.

In writing this post it has turned into a clinical list of events.  That is partly my intention as I feel the need to log our efforts to help Thomas:

  • Tuesday, 14th January – Thomas began a course of antibiotics in the evening, to deal with a suspected infection.
  • Friday, 17th January – By this time, his poops were like pea soup & Thomas was more lethargic & sleepy.  I spoke to Mr EV that day & he said to come off the Baytril.  I removed it & replaced it with Guardian Angel in his water.
  • Monday, 20th January – Two lots of poop samples were given to Mr EV.  One was to test for bacteria and/or infection & the other to check if he is digesting food properly.  In the meantime, Thomas had a combination of Milk Thistle, L-Carnitine & Guardian Angel in his water.
  • Thursday, 23rd January – One lot of results were in: Thomas did NOT have an infection.  The other results were due later on, but speculating on those, Mr EV seemed to think the problem was all to do with Thomas’s liver not doing what it is supposed to do.  He mentioned another supplement that is used for dogs & cats but not tested on birds (probably due to dosage etc.)
  • Friday, 24th January – All this time, Thomas was getting worse.  At this point, I gave him Aloe Vera juice in his water (5ml in 50ml of water) & also pegged up a piece of Aloe Vera leaf which he appeared to nibble/lick.
  • Saturday, 25th January – Thomas had some slurps of the water with Aloe Vera.  He was eating millet when offered & sometimes seed.
  • Sunday, 26th January – In the morning, he stopped eating seed.  Not even millet.  In desperation I offered him different vegetables. He turned away from broccoli, celery, & spinach.  However, his eyes lit up when he saw the beetroot stalk.  Whatever beetroot had, he wanted it.  He could not get enough of those stalks.  In the afternoon he was even inspired to eat a little seed.  I switched back to Guardian Angel in his water.

Despite the obvious need to medicate to improve Thomas’s condition, his general well-being was Read more of this post

I hope Atilla & Raspy met you at Rainbow Bridge & are helping you to settle in.

Bye bye my darling boy.

I am sorry our time together was so short.

X-rated finale

I give you the finale to Phinny’s jiggy-jiggy hand jive!

Yes, that’s bad boy Cagney making a brief appearance.

He follows it up with a regurgitating session to my finger:

Floor full of water

In amongst the miserable wet & windy weather we have had, there have been sunny moments.  When the sun is shining for a few hours, the room gets nice & warm.  It is a good opportunity to get the spray bottle out & give the boys a misting.

The last couple of times they have had a misting with celery leaves.  As Thomas has not been well, he declined one of the invitations to frolic in the leaves & stayed in the cage, but the other three all took advantage of the offer.

Yesterday, there was another opportunity for them all to have a misting. Cagney was first down to the landing platform & investigate the celery.  This inspired Thomas & he dived into the leaves & got thoroughly wet.  There was no room for the others so they had to temporarily take a back seat.

Once Thomas had finished, Cagney took over & did the best he could with Phineas barring his way at every turn.

Bezukhov was desperate for a frolic in the leaves & had intermittent goes, before being put off by the others.

Phineas was the last to have a frolic.  He had got a little wet accompanying Cagney but that was not a proper wash so when Cagney was busy preening, he spent some quality time with the celery & the spray bottle.

After all of that spraying, I was almost knee deep in water myself!

Two steps forward, one step back

Following on from my previous post on Thomas & his health problems, we located the medication, L-Carnitine.  It is a liquid version for humans, of 500mg strength.  Mr EV had already been researching the product & confirmed that the lemon flavour of this particular product will actually be beneficial rather than detrimental.  He suggested a dosage of 2 drops per 50ml of water (similar to the Milk Thistle).  Thomas is to have the L-Carnitine on one day & the next day Milk Thistle, & so on.

This new regime began on Tuesday 17th December.

About one week later, Thomas was definitely livelier.  He was flying more, was more alert & more vocal.  His poops seemed a little drier, not quite so sloppy.  He was also responding to Cagney & began flirting again.  This, once again, caused a little friction with the others, but as yet, no major fights have happened, just near misses.

Over the Christmas holiday, Thomas was mostly better but had the odd down day where he seemed a bit lethargic.

However, in the last week, Thomas seems to have taken a step back.  He has still been coming out but he has not been flying as much & not flirting with Cagney.  His poops have also got wetter again.  Yesterday, I had a telephone consultation with Mr EV.  He suggested a short course of antibiotics in case Thomas has picked up another infection.  This began today, alongside the Milk Thistle/L-Carnitine regime.

We continue to keep a very close eye on Thomas.

2013 Review – FAILURES

During 2012 I had a number of Failures when attempting to photograph the boys.  Since then, either my photography skills have declined or the boys are just getting faster….

Wet & windy weather

We have had some wet & windy weather recently.  Interestingly, the boys find the sound of wind against the window more scary than the sound of thunder or fireworks.

When it is pouring down with rain & the window is covered in raindrops, Bezukhov is usually the first to investigate.  It is possible he is still trying to complete his study of rain that I reported about some time ago (click here).  This particular day, the other boys helped him with his investigations:

Review of search terms

I thought we could take a look at the various search terms over the last 500 posts, that have brought people to this blog.

The most common searches are typically about budgies, moults, trill toppers, cages (Ferplast/Montana), budgie noises & budgie health issues.

Bizarrely, the top search was the following:

There are many one-off searches.  I have categorised them:

  • Vaguely understandable – 99% unlikely the searcher was looking for a birdie blog but it is understandable they arrived here.
  • Definitely was not looking for a birdie blog – Pretty sure the searcher was NOT looking for a blog like this one!

Thomas & Phineas

The blog was started not long after the Toyboys entered our lives.  Atilla & Raspy were already well-established, respected puddings.  Their lives were to change dramatically when Cagney & Bezukhov arrived.  Surprisingly (given recent events) their introduction went well.  The girls were not territorial over the Manor & the toyboys seamlessly entered their domain.  Initially, both girls were quite taken with Cagney (naturally, as he was later to be named Mr Popular) but it did not take long for Raspy to switch her allegiance to the more subtle but more engaging Bezukhov.  They became a devoted couple, chasing each other & flirting.  It was lovely to see.

This left Cagney with Atilla to woo.  He took this task on with aplumb.  Atilla was a hard nut to crack.  He eventually did wear her down though & she became as devoted to him as he was to her.  Interestingly, Atilla & Cagney were the first to embark in carnal activities.  Though Raspy was keen to explore such areas, Bezukhov was rather shy & took a little coaxing.  Of course once they had succumbed, there was no turning back, & ‘synchronised boogie-woogie-ing‘ became commonplace.

Not long after I started the blog, Atilla provided me with rich content, when she unexpectedly began to lay eggs.  She laid 9 in succession.  With the benefit of hindsight, I would have provided her with a nest box & dummy eggs, to try & halt the process earlier.  It is pretty certain that her later hernia was triggered by the excessive egg-laying.

It was some time later, that Read more of this post
