Shift in flock relations

My last post on relations within the flock was awhile ago (click here).  Since that post at the end of December, things have moved on.

Perry appeared disinterested in a possible new friendship with Moriarty & I put that down to him just simply not wanting a new friend, or perhaps him not feeling too well.  However, something changed mid-January.  It is likely Perry began feeling better from all the ‘abscess‘ health drama that happened at the end of December/beginning of January.  It also indicates he was not feeling right in the lead up, hence shunning Moriarty in those early days.

Either way, on the 17th January 2021, Perry began to flirt with Moriarty through the bars!

This was an unexpected development!  Whilst I was pleased to see Perry engaging with Moriarty, it unfortunately meant Lennie taking a step back from his friendship with Moriarty, which was a shame as it had been developing well.  It also meant Lennie was effectively rejected, which is never a nice thing!!

Moriarty & Perry’s bond grew over the days to the point that each morning, when I unlocked Perry, he was straight over to Moriarty’s cage to say hello.  The first time, he overestimated his flying ability & landed on the floor, so from then on I gave him a little help to get over there.  His activity levels definitely increased!

The next step was Perry & Moriarty meeting without bars between them.  This happened with just the two of them, in Dalai’s cage, on the 30th January.  This meeting was highly animated with Moriarty even putting his foot up on Perry’s chest a few times!  You would think they were long, lost friends just reunited!

This friendship has continued & currently all three are together during the day, but still back in their respective cages at night – I think Perry & Lennie still appreciate that rest from young Moriarty.  Though the stronger friendship now appears to be between Perry & Moriarty, when Perry is resting, Moriarty is happy to interact & play with Lennie.  If Lennie is also resting, as a very last resort, Moriarty will turn to me for entertainment!

Eating together (almost) harmoniously

The little red seed pot

Last year, when Bezukhov lost weight, I encouraged him to eat by following him around & offering food at every opportunity.  One of the things I used was the little red seed pot.

Little red seed pots

Little red seed pots

The little pot is the bottom of a fountain seed feeder.  I like the little pot because it is… well… it is little (!) & shallow.  It is handy for putting small amounts of food in, like chopped vegetables.  I have used them a lot in the past but not so much now as the bars of the Manor are too widely spaced and the Silver Villa has vertical bars.

During the drive to help Bezukhov put weight back on, I would also offer food to Phineas (hence two little red seed pots) in the hope that Bezukhov’s flock mentality would kick in & he would eat too.  All this worked in the sense that Bezukhov regained his lost weight but it had the unfortunate consequence of Phineas becoming overweight!  At this point I scaled down use of the little red seed pots.  I would only offer it to Bezukhov (usually when Phineas was otherwise engaged).

Over time, the little red seed pot has become Bezukhov’s pot.  His weight is no longer an issue but I still offer it to him when it looks like he wants to eat in peace.  It is ‘our thing’.  When Bezukhov wants to eat from it, he usually goes to the top of the Villa door & looks down at my (empty) hands.  At which point I get the seed pot & hold it up to him for some one-on-one bonding time.

The only recent change has been Dalai’s presence.  Though Dalai is not tame, he is curious.  He has noticed this little red seed pot ritual & approached recently when he saw Bezukhov eating from it.  I have encouraged Dalai’s curiosity as any way to get him closer to my hand & to see that I am not a threat, is welcome.  Twice now, Dalai has been brave enough to eat from the little pot (with me holding it!)  Bezukhov still gets his opportunity to eat from it & I do not see that ritual changing any time soon.

Who knew that a little red seed pot could be so pivotal, significant & useful?

Who’s chasing me??

Recent goings-on have reminded me of an episode of Frasier.  Bear with me whilst I explain…

For those who are interested, it is The Ski Lodge, Season 5, Episode 14.

Summary: Roz wins a weekend at a ski lodge, and trades it to Frasier. So Frasier decides to take the whole family to the ski lodge including Daphne and her friend Annie, a swimsuit model. Once there, they meet Guy, a gay ski instructor, who has an eye for Niles. After dinner, and much butter rum, a bedroom farce ensues, where Frasier chases after Annie, who chases after Niles, who pursues Daphne, who has fallen for Guy, who obviously thinks Niles is gay.

The ultimate reveal is that no-one was after the right person, and no-one at all was after Frasier.

Frasier: Oh, wait, wait, wait! Wait, everybody! [everyone stops and
looks at him] Let me see if I've got this straight. All the
lust coursing through this lodge tonight, all the hormones
virtually ricocheting off the walls, and no one... was chasing
         me?

Translate this to what has been going on here & we have something very, very similar:

Cagney chases Thomas who has an eye for Bezukhov.  Bezukhov fancies Thomas.  Thomas is keeping his options open & flirts with both Cagney & Bezukhov.  Phineas has the hots for Cagney.  Cagney & Bezukhov are mates & flirt with each other.

Phinny: Oh, wait, wait, wait! Wait, everybody! [everyone stops and
looks at him] Let me see if I've got this straight. All the
lust coursing through the Ferplast today, all the hormones
virtually ricocheting off the cage bars, toys and perches, and
         no one... is chasing me?

Toyboy time

When left to their own devices, i.e., when Phineas is locked up in his own cage, Cagney & Bezukhov still like to run around together.  They are great mates.  They also have their “bonding” moments.  I love to see them head bopping, beak tapping & getting excited.  Phineas does not allow them to do this so I try to allow them some quality toyboy time each day to remind themselves of their affection for each other.
