Lennie Milestone: On my finger!

Some of my recent posts have been about milestones Moriarty has achieved as he settles in. But milestones do not need to be about the young or those in new, developing situations, they can also apply to the old, or those in well-established routines.

Take Lennie, for example.  From some point early on (post-quarantine days) he decided he needed to be wary of me.  He will always give me a wide berth – sometimes very wide!  His only slight exception will be if millet is involved.  Ordinarily, this would be a great training tool but since Lennie is very overweight, I decided it best not to encourage more millet-eating just so I could get near him.

So, you can imagine my surprise when, on the 1st of May, he voluntarily landed on my finger!

Alas, it was not a new-found acceptance of me but a need to not miss anything with Perry & Moriarty!

Lennie

Perry & Moriarty were on my hand, in front of Moriarty’s cage, flirting & running up & down my arm.  My other hand was beside them (between them & the cage).  Their flirting intensified & Lennie made his way over to the top of Moriarty’s cage to investigate.  I could see he desperately wanted to join Perry & Moriarty but was holding back as they were on me!  Nevertheless, I kept my free hand out, positioned where he could easily fly down to it, thinking he will never come, but he wanted to join in the fun so much that he actually flew down onto my finger!  He was not there long as he realised pretty quickly that this was an out-of-the-ordinary event & he did not want me to get the wrong impression!

Still, it was a nice feeling & nice to know that even when habits & routines are well-established, an occasional leap into unknown territory is possible!

The Koothrapalli Effect

Moriarty & Lennie

Moriarty & Lennie

For those familiar with the US TV show The Big Bang Theory, they will know what I mean by the Koothrapalli Effect.  In summary, one of the show’s characters, Raj Koothrapalli, had an inability to speak to or around unrelated women – a medical condition known as selective mutism.

So, why am I bringing this up here?  Lennie has been suffering the Koothrapalli Effect with regards to Moriarty!  This was very frustrating, especially in the early days.  Moriarty would be tweeting & chirping through the bars & although Lennie was showing a response (feathers raised, eyes dilated, beak tapping etc.) he was mute!  It must have been off-putting for Moriarty, especially because at the time Perry was not interacting with him.  Sometimes, Lennie would chirp but he would turn or move away from Moriarty before making a sound!

It was interesting that for a time, Moriarty got into the habit of walking about or sitting on top of the cage, above where Lennie was, & would listen to all of Lennie’s chat, knowing that if he descended down the side to be in front of him, Lennie would go silent.

Fortunately, over time Lennie has loosened up.  It began with the odd chirp inadvertently escaping whilst Moriarty was close (Moriarty would be so excited when that happened!)  Now, you would not think there had ever been a problem!

I am including some videos below to show the various interactions, silent & otherwise.

Shift in flock relations

My last post on relations within the flock was awhile ago (click here).  Since that post at the end of December, things have moved on.

Perry appeared disinterested in a possible new friendship with Moriarty & I put that down to him just simply not wanting a new friend, or perhaps him not feeling too well.  However, something changed mid-January.  It is likely Perry began feeling better from all the ‘abscess‘ health drama that happened at the end of December/beginning of January.  It also indicates he was not feeling right in the lead up, hence shunning Moriarty in those early days.

Either way, on the 17th January 2021, Perry began to flirt with Moriarty through the bars!

This was an unexpected development!  Whilst I was pleased to see Perry engaging with Moriarty, it unfortunately meant Lennie taking a step back from his friendship with Moriarty, which was a shame as it had been developing well.  It also meant Lennie was effectively rejected, which is never a nice thing!!

Moriarty & Perry’s bond grew over the days to the point that each morning, when I unlocked Perry, he was straight over to Moriarty’s cage to say hello.  The first time, he overestimated his flying ability & landed on the floor, so from then on I gave him a little help to get over there.  His activity levels definitely increased!

The next step was Perry & Moriarty meeting without bars between them.  This happened with just the two of them, in Dalai’s cage, on the 30th January.  This meeting was highly animated with Moriarty even putting his foot up on Perry’s chest a few times!  You would think they were long, lost friends just reunited!

This friendship has continued & currently all three are together during the day, but still back in their respective cages at night – I think Perry & Lennie still appreciate that rest from young Moriarty.  Though the stronger friendship now appears to be between Perry & Moriarty, when Perry is resting, Moriarty is happy to interact & play with Lennie.  If Lennie is also resting, as a very last resort, Moriarty will turn to me for entertainment!

Remembering Cagney on his birthday

Today would have been Cagney’s 9th birthday.  For the first time in a long time, he will be able to celebrate it with his best buddy, Bezukhov.

With that in mind, I have chosen a video of the two of them having a little flirt:

Thinking of you, my lovely, charming boy.

We love you.

Grapes, tomatoes & medicine

As previously reported (click here) Cagney was taken into hospital on the afternoon of Saturday 22nd August, specifically for a barium x-ray.  This would entail an overnight stay.

I returned home from the vets, without Cagney, feeling wretched.  I could not have felt worse.  Actually, I did feel worse, when Bezukhov looked at me & saw that I had not brought home his best buddy.  His expression was a mixture of confusion, betrayal & sadness.

Bezukhov visiting Phineas

I was undecided whether to let Bezukhov & Phineas out for a fly as I did not want to confuse things further.  Plus, I was expecting to go out again later.  In the end, Bezukhov was flying madly about the Manor so I relented & let him out.  He immediately went over to Phinny’s cage to chat to him.  In the meantime I waited for the phone call from Ms Exotic Hospital Vet (EHV).

She rang around 7pm that evening to say Cagney had had the first stage of the barium x-ray & the next part would not happen for another 4 hours so I could visit him anytime before then.  I packed an overnight bag for him with his brand of seed, pellets, sugar snap peas & grated carrot.  I also packed a water bottle & seed pot that fitted the travel cage.  We (myself & my mother) arrived at the hospital around 20:30.  We were shown into a visitors room whilst the nurse went to get Cagney.  He looked very much the same but very, very sleepy.  We talked to him & told him what Bezukhov & Phineas had been up to.  He started to preen a little & then, much to our delight, ate some millet.  I like to think that our visit was welcome.  We had to leave eventually but as he was having treatment during the night I knew he was being looked after.

The next thing was to wait until the morning to hear how the tests went.

In the morning, I let Bezukhov out early.  He seemed troubled to be in the Manor on his own & needed to be out.  I also let Phineas out as he had spent the previous day locked up.  Occasionally they have a little flirt (initiated by Bezukhov) but under normal circumstances it does not go far as Cagney investigates & interrupts proceedings (vice versa – if Cagney flirts with Phineas, Bezukhov interrupts).  Without Cagney’s presence, the flirting was continued unhindered to the point that Bezukhov regurgitated to Phineas!  Evidence shown in this video:

A vet rang later that morning to say that Cagney was doing well.  The barium x-ray did not show up any obstruction.  However, Cagney was now passing faeces.  He had eaten a little & was preening.  She suggested he have antibiotics & metacam (anti-inflammatory) to help bring his temperature down.  I could pick him up that afternoon after a consultation with another vet.

It was a relief to see Cagney again.  He looked well considering all he had been through.  There were halved grapes pushed through the cage bars which was possibly another ordeal as grapes are scary.  At the bottom of his cage was half a cherry tomato.  That would have been the first time he has seen a tomato.  There was a curly green leaf, possibly kale, too.

The vet confirmed that he is to take antibiotics daily & metacam orally once a day.  They gave Cagney metacam when I was there which meant his next dose would be 24 hours later at 5pm.  I said I prefer to give the medicine in the morning so they said it would be better to wait until the morning after.  They suggested I book a follow-up visit with Ms EHV for the Tuesday.

Finally, after a very long 24 hours, I could take my lovely toyboy home.

To be continued

Unusual goings-on

As we know, Phineas loves Cagney.  Although Cagney likes to flirt with Phinny occasionally, he is otherwise ‘not into him’.

Until today?

This morning, Phineas unusually, did not have an in-cage jiggy-jiggy but seemed satisfied with regurgitation.  I made a mental note of this…. he would surely need a ‘service’ at some point during the day.  When it came to out-of-cage time, Phinny was indeed quite hyper.  It did not take long for him to initiate a boogie-woogie session on my hand.

Give us a kiss, Cagney!

Give us a kiss, Cagney!

Pass me the bucket...!

Pass me the bucket…!

Cagney was interested in his progress but that is not unusual.  Whilst Phinny is busy jiggling about on my hand, Cagney jumps on my thumb to shout encouragement & often at this point Bezukhov will come to investigate too.

However, today events took a surprising turn.

Cagney showed extra interest!  As he was getting excited, Bezukhov came & sat on my other hand but Cagney chased him away, then quickly returned to a fluffed up, frenzied Phinny & jumped on his back!!!

Phineas was not prepared for this new development (though he may have dreamt of it many times!) & lost his balance & fell off my hand & landed, fortunately, on my soft slippers.  Cagney meanwhile, also fell as Phinny disappeared from underneath him, but remembered he had wings & flew to the manor.

Both Phineas & Cagney reconvened on top of the manor & proceeded to regurgitate.  It was not clear who was feeding who but Cagney definitely did a few head bobs so may well have contributed.

When all was finished, Cagney retired into the manor & sat with his mate Bezukhov.  I kept a close eye on Bezukhov afterwards as I did not like the thought of him being left out, or rather feeling left out.

After all the activity, Phineas was hot; his wings were away from his body to cool him down.   All seemed to return to ‘normal’, though I am not sure what ‘normal’ means here anymore!

Reciprocation?

Recently, whilst Bezukhov was poorly & not his usual self, I noticed that Cagney spent more time with Phineas.

This seemed like a natural thing to happen, being as Phineas could be found every which way Cagney turned anyway.  However, there were a couple of occasions when Phineas was desperate to regurgitate & Cagney reciprocated.  I caught one of these moments on video:

Each time it was over very quickly & Cagney immediately returned to Bezukhov’s side.  It suggests his bond with Bezukhov is strong, yet he is unable to resist the opportunity to flirt, particularly with the recent temporary absence of flirting sessions with Bezukhov. Bezukhov certainly noticed Cagney’s indiscretions but due to being unwell, chose not to react.

Of more concern to me was Phineas.  This is the attention that he craves & certainly from the one he most craves it from!  How pleased I was to see Phinny get some ‘lurving’, yet it worried me that Cagney was leading him on.  Would it make him more jealous than he already is?

Well, Bezukhov is back to his usual self now, so there has been no more exchanging of seed between Cagney & Phineas.  Phinny seems no worse.  He has not taken things out on Bezukhov (any more than usual).  He still adores Cagney.  I cannot see that ever changing, however Cagney behaves.

Two steps forward, one step back

Following on from my previous post on Thomas & his health problems, we located the medication, L-Carnitine.  It is a liquid version for humans, of 500mg strength.  Mr EV had already been researching the product & confirmed that the lemon flavour of this particular product will actually be beneficial rather than detrimental.  He suggested a dosage of 2 drops per 50ml of water (similar to the Milk Thistle).  Thomas is to have the L-Carnitine on one day & the next day Milk Thistle, & so on.

This new regime began on Tuesday 17th December.

About one week later, Thomas was definitely livelier.  He was flying more, was more alert & more vocal.  His poops seemed a little drier, not quite so sloppy.  He was also responding to Cagney & began flirting again.  This, once again, caused a little friction with the others, but as yet, no major fights have happened, just near misses.

Over the Christmas holiday, Thomas was mostly better but had the odd down day where he seemed a bit lethargic.

However, in the last week, Thomas seems to have taken a step back.  He has still been coming out but he has not been flying as much & not flirting with Cagney.  His poops have also got wetter again.  Yesterday, I had a telephone consultation with Mr EV.  He suggested a short course of antibiotics in case Thomas has picked up another infection.  This began today, alongside the Milk Thistle/L-Carnitine regime.

We continue to keep a very close eye on Thomas.

Cagney is confusing things!

So, we have some general confusion here.

  • Cagney & Bezukhov are basically like an old married couple.  They are together, flirt & have “bonding sessions”, but do not go as far as hanky-panky or regurgitating to each other.
  • Bezukhov can get a bit put out if Cagney flirts with Thomas.
  • Phineas & Thomas tolerate each other as long as the other is not flirting with Cagney.
  • Thomas loves Cagney & Cagney is prepared to experiment with Thomas.
  • Phineas loves Cagney but Cagney is not interested in him…..

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

………………………. or is he???

.

Recently, Cagney, Bezukhov & Phineas were out & about.  Thomas was still locked in.  Phineas was having his usual jiggy session on my hand.  Sometimes Cagney investigates as I think he does not like to miss out on anything.  However, this time, Cagney responded.  Phinny was bumping & grinding on my hand & Cagney, sat on my thumb, was doing kissy-kissy with Phinny!  Ooo-er!

When Phineas had finished his “job”, Cagney carried on with the flirting & the two of them had a little run around together.  In fact, I saw Cagney put his foot on Phinny’s back!

Now, I was delighted to see that Phineas was getting something back from Cagney.  I mean, he has been chasing him since around last November, with no result.  My joy did not last though, as I remembered how fickle Cagney can be.  As expected, when Thomas came out to play, Cagney made a beeline for him & they flirted heavily.

What about Phineas?  How confusing for the poor boy.

Things are hotting up

Cagney & Thomas have been flirting heavily.  Thomas is trying very hard with Cagney but it does not take Cagney long to respond.  I even spied Cagney jump on Thomas’s back.  As you can see below, I filmed it too!

Thomas was surprised by this development but I doubt that it put him off.

What is Cagney thinking?  Is this serious or is it just a fling?  The last back he jumped on was Atilla’s, his beloved & his leader.
