Preening Perry’s head

Perry still likes to have his head preened & Dalai still likes to oblige.

Blue newbies – the early days

Spearmint Perry & Lennie Denisov came to our home on the 14th of November 2016.  They had been in a busy cage of about 10-12 budgies. Though I specifically got two so they had company during quarantine, I thought it still might take some time for them to adjust to the quieter surroundings.  I hoped they would also become friends during quarantine.

They were indeed very quiet that first evening; both sat together on the perch in the corner.  Fortunately, the perch they chose to sit on had the millet spray by it, so they were able to eat something without having to be particularly brave.

It did not take long for Perry & Lennie to relax into their new cage.  They were relatively quiet at first, but tucked into the millet quickly & had a tentative explore of their new home.  I initially put seed in a dish on the floor of the cage as that was how they were used to feeding.  I was happy they were eating but it was quite a few days before I actually saw them drink.

Gradually, they started checking out different things.  They found the little white dish with tonic seed.  They found the central chewy toy which provided (& still provides!) hours of beak action.  That particular toy was a success – the raffia could be chewed & pulled out, the paper string could be chewed & the little knots untied & beads could be played with (before they fell off!) & wooden blocks could be climbed.

It took them a bit longer to work out how to use the swing, but once they did, they used to sleep together on it of a night.

Well fed fingers

Phineas is still regurgitating to my finger.  He is still blowing bubbles.  This phase is ongoing.  We do not have an end date yet.

The regurgitation session can occur many, many times a day.  Duration of each session appears to be getting longer.  If I wait until he comes to a natural end rather than force him to end as I have things to do [rolls eyes!], this may mean waiting up to 25 minutes.  (I usually  have the TV remote control to hand).

Sometimes he attempts to clean my finger & licks it all over.  Recently, after the licking, he preens my finger.  As you can see from the photos below, more often than not, my finger (& sometimes hand) needs a good wash afterwards.

A most interesting incident happened a few days ago where Phineas was on top of the manor, regurgitating to my index finger.  I was holding my hand up to him, resting it on the cage with my index finger out but other fingers folded back.  He regurgitated as normal but then tapped on the knuckle of my middle finger.  I unfolded that & he proceeded to regurgitate to that finger.  Hmm… interesting.

Then he tapped on my ring finger.  I unfolded that & he regurgitated to that finger.  It was like he was feeding all my fingers.  He seemed satisfied after doing 3 fingers & then off he went & left me with this:

Remembering my girls: The first video

On this day, 5 years ago, I brought my two girls back home from the breeder.  Little did I know the impact they would have on me. 🙂

I would like to share the first video I took of them a few days after they had settled in:

They were just 8 weeks old & you can see how young they look from their colouring (Raspy was still blue) & still black beaks.  The video starts off with Raspy attempting to preen Atilla but Atilla is not keen when Raspy preens down her back, so moves away.  Raspy then goes on to chew the perch &, tellingly, Atilla is on the alert, looking around the room.  She showed leadership potential so early.

Returning the favour

Just a few days after I found Phineas preening Thomas, Thomas kindly returned the favour!

Although he is not being chased, for once, it seems, someone is at least being affectionate with Phineas. 🙂

Getting closer?

After about a week of Phineas & Thomas having the lounge to themselves (see Separation post), I was stunned to see Phineas preening Thomas!  They were both sat on the window perch.  I looked up from the laptop where I was working & could not believe my eyes.  I grabbed the camera & quickly started filming:

My little grey man was grown up enough to interpret that Thomas wanted his chops preened.  A little later, they were on the playgym & I saw Phineas preening Thomas again.  Out came the camera:

Who knew that Phineas had it in him?!

What is more, that same day, Thomas found his way into Phinny’s cage!  I think Phineas was a little surprised to see Thomas sat there on his perch & then Thomas eating his seed, but he took it in his stride.

Was Thomas going to stay overnight in Phinny’s home? Read more of this post
